During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, a Buddhist monk Pu Liang and his disciples provided shelter to many refugees. Their efforts go unappreciated when the refugees express their mistrust against Pu Liang after one of them discovers the monks performing a rite for a dead Japanese soldier. As the Japanese troops barge into the monastery, Pu Liang has to decide if he should put others before himself.

A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS is my final year thesis film as an undergraduate and a fictitious account of a lesser known war hero, Venerable Pu Liang, who, together with his two disciples were arrested by the Japanese during the Sook Ching operation and subsequently executed at Changi beach. His compassion and sacrifice during the Second World War is a beacon of courage and hope.
