SYNOPSIS

Young-mok has an unknown disease. His girlfriend Seon-hwa asserted that he would get better after taking medicine, but he intuitively felt death approaching. He cut off all of his relationships and persisted in Zen practice in a new house to achieve Enlightenment. The path to enlightenment is long, and death seems to come closer little by little. As time goes by, he falls into single koan <無 non-being> Then one day, things begin to appear to him.

Meanwhile, Ji-woo has to do a new exhibition soon, but it is painful that she cannot do new work. She is afraid of the end, so she has only drawn the moment just before reaching a conclusion. The exhibition curator recommends trying the animation again. She has avoided animation because of the idea that the story will eventually end. She struggles to find a new form. Then a strange man begins to stand out to her.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

不一不二

It is the philosophy of Seon (Zen) Buddhism that you and I are neither one nor two, and that we are neither the same nor different. Young-mok seeks enlightenment; and Ji-woo, an inspiration. As their paths are interwoven into a story that is neither one nor two, they breathe into each other and coexist.

脫 or Tal (meaning “release”) is a letter that embodies the smiling face of a person who has freed oneself from the body. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, where individuals are cut off from one another, I hope this movie conveys the bliss that comes from meeting with others, freeing us from all bondages.
